DSL is available everywhere in major cities and coastal regions, but in the suburbs, and especially in rural areas, the connection can be very slow. To install it, you should apply for it at the local state post office or other various providers . You should pay attention and pay bills monthly and separately from your phone bill otherwise your access will be switched off very quickly.

Phone company

There is no competitive situation on the Turkish telecommunications market (at least not for fixed and pay telephones). However, Turk Telekom’s long-standing monopoly position has created an excellent infrastructure, so that Turkey now offers impeccable access to telecommunications and internet services.

To make a long distance call (i.e. for all calls outside the Region of your area code), you must select a “0”, then the respective area code and finally the 7-digit phone number. Here you will find a list of the prefixes of the largest Turkish cities:

The area code 900 is a high-tariff number. Free numbers, on the other hand, start at 800.

International calls from Turkey

To make calls abroad from Turkey, first select “00”, then the corresponding country code, the area code and the local telephone number. If you have difficulties with the connection, select the 115. You can then use this number to connect to the network operator.

A Turkish number from abroad, you call select again, “00”, then the country code for Turkey (90) , then the area code and finally the phone number.

International telephone cards can be found in kiosks and supermarkets in all Turkish cities. The phone cards provide the cheapest Option to make international calls from Turkey, especially if you are only for a short time in Turkey.

If you have internet access, you can use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), e.g. Skype. This allows you to make free calls abroad. To do this, you just need to have Skype installed on your Computer, as well as the Person you are calling. You need both headphones and a microphone (or Web Cam). You can also use Skype to make calls to mobile or landline networks. This Service is not free, but very cheap.
